Dimmesdale has told
Pearl that he will not be seen with them in public until the world ends.
He practically says that he would never reveal his secret even if it
does mean that he's breaking the "electric chain". This is an example of
just how much shame Dimmesdale believes he is harboring. Little does he
know that his shame is actually turning into stress that will eventually kill him.
